Boat Captain Requirements
As a captain for the Southwest Highschool Dragons Fishing Club, you play a vital role in mentoring our students and keeping them safe. Your goal is to guide our student anglers while letting them lead the way on the water.
Role Guidelines
- Focus on Safety: Your primary job is safe navigation and boat operation.
- Mentorship: Be a supportive guide, not a competitor.
- Hands-Off Coaching: Captains cannot fish, find fish for students, or offer tactical advice during tournaments. Students must make their own strategic decisions.
Qualifications & Safety
- Must be at least 21 years old.
- Significant experience operating a bass boat in tournaments.
- Knowledge of state boating laws and THSBA regulations.
- Current boater safety certification (if required for specific events).
- Approval from the club advisor.
- All boats must have $300,000 worth of liability insurance minimum to compete.
Captain Responsibilities
Before hitting the water, all captains must:
- Submit signed THSBA liability and safety paperwork.
- Ensure all safety gear, including life jackets and emergency kits, is functional and used.
- Maintain a positive, respectful, and safe environment on the boat.
The Captain Side Pot
Want to join the action? Captains can participate in a friendly competition during the regular season:
- Entry Fee: $20 for the 50/50 cash pot.
- Winner: The captain with the largest legal bass wins half the pot.
- Impact: The remaining half of the pot is donated to a scholarship fund.
- Rule: Your catch MUST remain separate from the students’ catch at all times.
